Search Engine Optimization is a process of improving the volume of traffic garnered by a web site in a given search engine through organic (natural or algorithmic) way. Search engines usual present an older site. This site is considered to have higher ranking compared to other results yielded by the search engine. The higher the ranking of the site, the higher will also be the chances of more visitors to the site. Search engine optimization can also target different types of search, local search, industry based search engines.

Search engine optimization is an Internet marketing strategy. SEO experts consider that optimizing the website involves editing the contents and coding of HTML to increase the relevance of specific keywords and to remove the barriers to the indexing activities of the search engines. Search engine optimization sometimes require that the contents of a site must also be changed.

The acronym "SEO" may also be called search engine optimizers, a word adopted by a group of consultants who do optimization projects on behalf of the clients.
